Dating apps in India are hard for men. That isn't an excuse, it's maths. Most apps have far more men than women, so every woman sees a long queue of profiles and swipes fast.

The good news: most of those profiles are bad. Blurry group photos, a bio that says "ask me", and a first message that says "hi". If you fix the basics, you move ahead of most of the queue.

This hub covers the whole path: profile, bio, prompts, first message, and getting to a real date.

1. Photos decide the swipe

Nobody reads your bio if your photos lose her in two seconds.

  • First photo: just you, face clear, smiling. No sunglasses, no cap pulled low, no group of five where she has to guess.
  • One full-length photo. Standing, relaxed, decent clothes.
  • One photo doing something. Trekking, cooking, playing guitar, at a cricket match. It gives her a conversation starter.
  • One photo with friends, but not the first one, and you should be easy to spot.
  • Skip these: gym mirror selfies, car selfies, photos with a bike and no face, and photos with a woman she might think is your ex.

Four to six good photos beat nine average ones.

2. Your bio is a conversation starter

A bio has one job: give her an easy way to message you. Two or three short lines, with at least one specific detail she can ask about.

Software guy in Pune by day, terrible home cook by night. Looking for someone to judge my dal and recommend better playlists.

That bio tells her where you are, gives her two things to joke about, and sounds relaxed. We have full lists for this:

3. Prompts: answer with a story, not a word

On Hinge especially, prompts carry your profile. "Travel" as an answer to "I geek out on" tells her nothing. "Finding the one dhaba on every highway trip that the locals actually eat at" tells her who you are.

See 40+ examples in Hinge prompts and answers.

4. The first message

"Hi" and "hey, how are you" are where most matches die. Your first message should:

  • mention something from her profile,
  • ask one easy question,
  • be short.

ok I need a ruling. your third photo is at Hampi, and I've been told sunrise at Matanga Hill is overrated. true or false?
FALSE. totally worth waking up at 4:30 for
4:30?! okay, you've clearly done this properly. what else should I not skip there?

For Bumble, where she usually messages first, see Bumble opening lines. It covers how to reply to her opener so the chat doesn't die after one line.

5. Keep the chat going

Once she replies, the rules are the same as any chat: ask questions that come out of her answers, share a bit about yourself, keep it light. If it slows down to "haha" and "ok", change the energy instead of sending five more questions.

We have a full guide on this in Hinglish: ladki se chat kaise kare.

6. Move to a date, sooner than you think

Chats that go on for weeks usually fade. After three or four days of good back-and-forth, suggest something small and specific:

"There's a stand-up open mic at a cafe in Indiranagar this Saturday. Want to go laugh at some bad jokes with me?"

A specific plan is easy to say yes to. "We should meet sometime" is easy to ignore.

7. Stay safe, and respect her safety

  • Meet in public places the first few times.
  • Never send money to someone you met online, whatever the story. That is how most dating scams work.
  • Don't share her photos or chats with anyone.
  • If she says no, or stops replying, let it go. Don't message from a new account.

Common mistakes that quietly kill your matches

  1. Copy-pasting the same opener to everyone. She can tell.
  2. Complimenting only her looks. She has 40 of those messages already.
  3. Negative bios. "No drama, no fake people, swipe left if..." makes you sound bitter.
  4. Going sexual early. Instant unmatch, and it should be.
  5. Asking for her Instagram or number in message two. Earn it first.
  6. Disappearing for three days, then "hey stranger". Keep a steady rhythm or be honest that you got busy.

Practise the chat part before it counts

Profiles get you matches. Conversations get you dates. And conversation is the part most guys never practise.

Sprk is not a dating app. It is a private place to practise chatting with Indian AI characters who react like real people, in Hinglish by default. Try Tara, a free-spirited photographer who never stays in one place, or Kavya, a poet you'd spot at an open mic. Get the awkward first lines out of your system there, then open the dating app.

FAQ

What are some tips for men on dating apps?
Use 4 to 6 clear photos with your face visible in the first one, write a short bio that gives her something to ask about, answer prompts with specifics, open with a question about her profile, and suggest a real plan within a few days of good chat.
Why do guys get so few matches in India?
Most Indian dating apps have far more men than women, so women are picky and swipe fast. Profiles with blurry group photos, sunglasses in every picture, or an empty bio get skipped. Small upgrades make a big difference.
What is the 3-3-3 rule of dating?
It is an informal rule people share online, usually meaning three dates, three weeks or three months as checkpoints to decide whether things are going somewhere. Treat it as a loose guide, not a law.
Should I message first on dating apps?
On Tinder and Hinge, yes. Don't wait. On Bumble, women usually make the first move in matches with men, so your job is to reply quickly and well. Check each app's current rules, as they change.
Is Sprk a dating app?
No. Sprk does not match you with real people. It is a private space to practise chatting with Indian AI characters, so you are more relaxed when a real match replies.
