Dating slang meanings: rizz, situationship and more

Dating has its own language now. Your friend says he's "in a situationship", your cousin says a guy has "zero rizz", and someone in the group chat says she got "breadcrumbed" again.

If half of it sounds made up, that's because most of it is new. Here's what each term means, in plain words, with examples from the way Indian guys and girls actually talk.

Rizz

Rizz means charm, the ability to flirt well and make someone interested in you. It comes from the middle of the word "charisma". If a guy has rizz, conversations with him feel easy and fun. "Rizzing someone up" means flirting with them.

Example: "Bhai ne canteen mein ek line mein uska number le liya. Uski rizz alag level ki hai."

Situationship

A situationship is when two people act like a couple, talking daily, meeting, maybe even jealous of each other, but there's no label and no clear future. More than friends, less than a relationship.

Example: "Six months ho gaye, roz baat hoti hai, par woh 'hum kya hain' ka jawab nahi deti. Situationship hai."

Dry texter

A dry texter replies with one word, "hmm", "ok", "haha", and never asks anything back. Sometimes it's low interest. Sometimes it's just someone who hates texting.

Example: you send a paragraph about your day, she replies "nice".

Ghosting

Ghosting is when someone suddenly stops replying and disappears, with no explanation. Chats, calls, everything goes silent.

Example: three good dates, then nothing. Messages delivered, never answered.

Breadcrumbing

Breadcrumbing is giving someone just enough attention to keep them hooked, without any real intention. A like on your story, a "heyyy" once a week, never a plan.

Example: she reacts to every story but never has time to meet. That's breadcrumbs.

Red flag and green flag

A red flag is a warning sign about someone's behaviour, like checking your phone, lying about small things, or being rude to waiters. A green flag is the opposite: a sign they're a good person to be with, like remembering what you said or respecting your "no".

Example: "Usne pehli date pe waiter pe chillaya. Red flag."

Talking stage

The talking stage is the early phase where two people are texting and getting to know each other, before any dates or labels. It can last days or, annoyingly, months.

Example: "Abhi talking stage mein hain, date pe nahi gaye."

Delulu

Delulu is short for delusional, used jokingly for someone imagining a romance that isn't really happening. "Delulu is the solulu" is the ironic version: stay hopeful anyway.

Example: "Usne ek baar smile kiya aur tum shaadi ke naam soch rahe ho? Delulu."

Love bombing

Love bombing is when someone showers you with huge attention, gifts and "you're my soulmate" messages very early, often to create quick attachment. It feels amazing at first, which is why it's worth noticing.

Example: two weeks in, daily gifts, "I've never felt this with anyone", and anger when you want space.

Left on read

Left on read means your message was seen but not answered. On WhatsApp that's the blue ticks. On Instagram it's "Seen".

Example: blue ticks at 9pm, still no reply at midnight.

Knowing the words is easy. Using them well isn't.

Understanding what rizz means doesn't give you rizz. Knowing what a dry texter is doesn't fix a dying chat.
